I haven't written a new journal in over a year... but who really reads these anyway?  I'll just post my website and walk away :)

Hi all,
For those of you who actually read these things, you're most likely aware that I had been unemployed since early January of this year.  During that time, I worked my ass off to try to find work. I hit the streets, the internet, the networking events... I did anything and everything I could to find work.  After all, I do have a lovely wife and a chinchilla to take care of.  Three weeks ago I was working as a contractor at Ubisoft, working on cover art for a new game.  I got a call about a position I thought I would never get.  They wanted to do a phone interview.  Naturally I agreed!  I was very nervous so I did all the research I could on the company to make myself not sound like an idiot.  The interview was successful so they wanted to meet me in person.  I went through two rounds of interviews meeting with about 9 people in total.  The day of my last interview... actually an hour after, I received a call.  They offered me the position of art director at DeNA West.  I social gaming company with a very bright future.  So now here I am, employed again, but only because I worked my tail off.  Nothing is free. Everything comes from hard work, so if you're looking for work, or are in dire straits, just KEEP GOING!
In addition to my new position, I got a call from a gallery here in San Francisco that specializes in featuring digital artists.  They wanted to meet to show me their space, and see if I was interested in maybe doing a show with them.  The Folsom Street Foundry is a new bar/ gallery.  It's a fantastic space run by fantastic guys.  They looked at my work and offered me a full show on the spot.  The show starts this Thursday and will run for a few weeks!  I've never done a full show before... hell, I've barely done a show with other people.  I'm so very excited to be a part of this and if there's anyone in the Bay area who wants to come, it's free and there will be food and drink and merriment so please come out!

The show is on Thursday from 5PM to 9PM and the address is: Folsom Street Foundry

1425 Folsom Street

San Francisco, CA 94103

They are also looking for new artists to show work!  So check them out online and see if you can get a show!

Cheers.

I am very flattered to have received a DD for my piece "A Well Laid Trap"!  garylaibart.deviantart.com/art…
The outpouring of support has been so tremendous and is especially welcome in sort of a difficult time, so thank you, thank you, thank you!

In addition, I'm thinking about opening up some commissions.  Fantasy sketches for people who want 'em.  If you look in my gallery at any of the pencil sketches, that's the kind of work I do with pencil.  If it interests you, awesome!  If not, no worries.  But if enough interest is created, I'll open commissions in the very near future!

Also, I'm going to try to put all of my sketches in one book (to see if it's possible!) and if there's enough interest there, I'll look into selling it!

Thank you all again!

Much Love,

Gary

I got the official email today from the contest and here's how it read.

"Dear Gary-

Congratulations on being the Grand Prize Winner in The Hobbit Design Contest!

John Howe was very taken by your work and we wanted to pass along his comments to you:

"Well, this is my favourite one. It captures very very well the spirit of Bilbo's encounter with the trolls. Their costumes are great (love the two arrows embedded in the door that one wears as armour, testimony to night-time foraging and tense encounters) the expressions perfect, the fire nicely rendered and the lighting most effective.

You will recieve your prizes as quickly as possible.

Congratulations again! Be sure and check out The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in theaters very soon!

Best,

The Hobbit Design Contest Team"

So after a few months of judging and waiting and more judging, I received a fedex earlier this week.  It appears that my work has made me the grand prize winner of the "Creature" category for the contest!!!  I was so excited to hear about it, and I'm still smiling!  It fees like it justifies the path that I've taken to in my career with the stamp of approval from John Howe, Alan Lee, and Richard Taylor.  I'm so honored and flattered.  Thank you all who offered your support and encouragement!

Hi everyone!

So I'm going to be entering an art competition, something that I never really do.  WETA is sponsoring an amazing contest with amazing prizes and it all centers around The Hobbit.  This is the first competition that I've done in a very long time and I'm hoping to have a kick ass painting done for it.  My fingers are crossed that I'll get it done on time!  I'll be posting updates as I go along.

So I've been on DA for a long time now... I think I signed up in 2003 or 04...  When I first started out, it seemed that there was no end to the comments and critiques I would receive from people.  It was nice, it felt more like a community.  It seemed there were a lot of people out there who were supportive of what I had been doing and, I'll admit, I did like the compliments.

But that's not what I'm writing this for.  Every so often I get a comment saying "Why don't you have more pageviews?" or "How come you're not more popular on DA?"  Well, in truth, I do want to make my mark on the art community as a whole.  I want to be a positive source of inspiration and, hopefully, someone that people will turn to when they need help or advice.  I don't rightly care pageviews, etc...  But I do miss that sense of community.

Over the years, the comments have dwindled with a few close friends and acquaintances leaving their support and critique.  When I look back at where I started, though, I feel like my artwork wasn't worth the paper I had drawn it on, certainly not worth the amount of feedback I received on it.  I have grown as an artist.  I feel like I'm really starting to come into my own, but for some reason, my artwork isn't reaching as many people as I would like.  Certainly not as many as it used to.

So I'm left wondering, is there something I'm not doing that I should be?  I seem to be lacking something that catches the eye, but have no idea what that might be.  Yes, I know putting my work up on many different sites, network, blah, blah... I've heard it all before.  The fact is, I do what I can with the time I have.  I work on personal art when time allows and show what I can here to virtually no feedback from watchers.  Like I said, I miss that sense of community.

With all that being said, those who have stuck beside me, offering comments, leaving feedback, etc... I thank you.  DA has been a tremendous support for me and you have been a part of that.  To those who will probably never read this, I ask, where did everyone go?

All the best.

Imagine FXpose Feature

Mon Oct 24, 2011, 9:22 AM
I woke up this morning to find out that my artwork had been featured in Imagine FX... in JULY!!!  I submitted to them over a year ago and got no response at all and then the ONLY issue I hadn't gotten this year was the one that my artwork was in!  ARGH!

Anyway, I need a hard copy of it but don't know how to go about getting one.  I downloaded a digital copy and sure enough, my work is right there on page 15!  I'm excited about it but I wish I would have gotten that issue!
